One-time renter payment coming to Canada

1.8 million low-income Canadians may soon be eligible for $500 benefit

The federal government has proposed several new measures to help make life more affordable for Canadians, including providing a one-time renter payment of $500 to an estimated 1.8 million people struggling to pay rent. According to a recent update from the Department of Finance Canada, the new plan will double the federal government’s Budget 2022 commitment and reach twice as many Canadians as initially promised.

As a frequent user of the Residential Tenancy Dispute Resolutions Service (RTDRS), we are making you aware of an upcoming pilot program that will change the standard duration of the initial hearing of claims for damages and abatement of rent.

Did you know? Changes to the RTA about Security Deposits

The Alberta Government recently passed legislation that amends the Residential Tenancies Act and provides greater flexibility to landlords when returning security deposits to tenants.

Section 46(1)(a) was repealed, and the following (in red font) was substituted in its place:

(a) “deliver” means

(i) deliver by personal service,

(ii) send by regular mail or registered mail, or

(iii) deliver in any other manner agreed to in writing by the landlord and tenant;

The landlord and tenant can now agree, in writing, how the security deposit is to be returned to the tenant at the end of the tenancy.
